Girls beat Cozad, fall to McCook in openers

    The Lady Longhorns got off to a good start Thursday night in Cozad as they toppled the Haymakers 50-41.
    Chase County controlled the tip-off and got the first basket of the game. In a game full of turnovers, steals and a lot of fast breaks the Longhorns didn’t seem to tire, leading after the first quarter 12-7 and 19-15 at half.
    Cozad seemed to find a better rhythem in the third quarter, outscoring the Longhorns 15-17, tightening the score to within two points going into the final period.
    The Longhorn defense looked like they wore down the Haymakers in the fourth with their relentless pressure, taking control of the game back by outscoring Cozad 16-9 to take the 50-41 victory.
    On Friday night McCook came to town and handed the Lady Longhorns their first loss of the year, 37-48.
    The Lady Longhorns couldn’t get any baskets to fall early in the game and got themselves into a deep hole that they couldn’t dig out from.It was a minute and a half before anyone scored in the game and then the Bison dropped in five points before Landree McNair sunk two freethrows for the Longhorns first scores.  
    The Horns where behind 3-15 at the end of the first quarter.
    It looked like there might be light at the end of the tunnel as the Horns outscored the Bison in the second quarter 11-6 to pull within seven at halftime, 14-21.
    The third period saw the Bison outscore the Longhorns by six  making it 26-39. The Lady Longhorns outscored McCook by two in the final stanza but it wasn’t enough to keep from losing the game 37-48.
