CCS wrestlers second at Sidney/Bridgeport

    Although last week’s snow storm changed the teams who came to Saturday’s Sidney/Bridgeport Invite, the Chase County wrestling team brought home a morale-boosting second place finish as a team.
    The Longhorns finished 80 points behind Class B #6 Cozad and CCS Head Coach Matt Vlasin said he was happy with Chase County’s total of 141 points.
    Thomas Reeves, 195 lbs., and Jaret Peterson, 220 lbs., both went undefeated.
    Vlasin said Peterson was looking forward to wrestling Gering’s Colin Schwartzkopf, ranked first in Class B, but the Bulldogs were one of at least eight teams unable to make it to the tournament.
    Luis Co was second at 145 lbs. with his only loss coming to Class B #4 Dreu White of Cozad. Vlasin said Co wrestled well right up until the first place match.
    Westyn Mendenhall also took second place behind a Cozad wrestler, Class B #7 Brock Malcolm.
    Zach Herbert bounced back from a 10-11 quarterfinal loss to Cozad’s Logan Baker and beat Baker in the 170 lb. third place match 11-3.
    Zach Tarin started the day off flat, Vlasin said, but bounced back to take third place.
Up next
    The Longhorns will return to the Ogallala Duals Jan. 7 after a two-year absence.
    Vlasin said CCS should be a pretty tough opponent for the Indians, Mitchell, Gothenburg, Sidney and Alliance.
    The Longhorns should be settling in to their appropriate weights. Cooper Dillan and Malachi Christensen have started working out and Vlasin is hopeful they’ll be ready to compete soon.
