CCS sets three meet records at Cambridge

The Chase County boys track team left its mark on the Don Stine Invite this year, setting three meet records and dominating in the team standings.
Longhorn athletes were hitting on all cylinders in winning 10 events.
Mason Wallin set a meet record in the pole vault with a winning jump of 13’7”. Carter Leibbrandt placed second.
Easton Fries won both hurdle races and set a new meet record in the 300s with a time of 40.51.
Fries and teammates Dawson Mollendor, Thomas Reeves and Jonathan Sosa won the 400-meter relay with a meet record time of 44.77. Tucker Mollendor, Austin Smith, Camron Lempke and James McArthur finished second.
CCS went 1-2-3 in the 100-meter dash, with D. Mollendor winning and Reeves and T. Mollendor right behind him.
Reeves took the 200-meter dash win with D. Mollendor hot on his heels.
Jaret Peterson won shot put and finished second in the discus behind fellow Longhorn Cooper Dillan.
Kade Anderson and McArthur went 1-2 in the triple jump.
Also grabbing a win was the 1,600-meter relay team of Luis Co, Sosa, Reeves and Fries.
The Longhorns took advantage of the JV/varsity meet to get everyone in something.
Head Coach Carl Zuege said having everyone involved adds to the excitement of the day.
“We had some excellent marks from our JV guys, and certainly some guys who earned varsity spots with their performances,” Zuege said.
Zuege pointed out Jesus Medina had great marks in both throws, Noah Rau had a really good discus throw and he thought Krayton Paisley posted a really nice time for his first time out in the 3200.
“All in all our JV guys just did an excellent job of competing all day,” Zuege said.
Of the nine Longhorns in throwing events, eight had PRs, including Medina with personal bests in both events.
“That is just a really good group of kids. We have nine throwers, and all of them can perform at a high level,” Zuege said, adding Peterson and Dillan are leading the way, but on any given day CCS could see a great performance from any of those guys.
“There really is not a weak link in that group. Also, a great deal of our team leadership comes from the guys in our throws, which is great to see,” Zuege continued.
Zach Herbert’s 800 run was another great performance that stood out to Zuege.
“Our throwers were great, and our young distance crew is continuing to improve. We have some really good competition going on all the way from the 100 up to the 800,” he said.
The meet was larger than past years as weather wreaked havoc on events earlier in the week.
The sprints and throws were especially loaded with athletes. Some events saw as many as 50 competitors. Chase County had the maximum six entries in nine events.
Up next
Friday will be the Sutherland Invite.
If the weather is nice and his Longhorns stay healthy, Zuege expects a fun meet.
Also there will be Arthur County, Dundy County Stratton, Garden County, Hershey, Hyannis, Maxwell, Paxton, Perkins County, Sandhills Valley, North Platte St. Pat’s and Wallace.
Out of 17 events, only one, the 200, will not have at least one athlete in either the Class C or D top ten.
Chase County’s home meet will be Tuesday.
The Longhorns will host Dundy County Stratton, Garden County, Ogallala and Perkins County.
After a 209-54 win at Cambridge, Zuege said coaches will really continue to challenge their athletes in practice for the next three weeks and really build their fitness.
“They have all worked hard and continue to improve, but the weather and other schedule conflicts have significantly limited the amount of good hard practices that we have been able to put our guys through,” he said.
With districts only one month away, Zuege wants to use the next few weeks to get in those hard practices.
