Ella Colson, left, and Riley Rusher, right, were relaxed and enjoying themselves as they crossed the finish line of the 100-meter dash prelims of the CCS Invite. Both ran personal bests in the heat.

CCS girls working on details as postseason approaches

The Chase County girls track team continues to click right along as the season progresses, but fine tuning still remains for the Longhorns.
Head Coach Troy Hauxwell likes how his relay teams have been running, but says there’s still work to do with hand offs.
Several athletes are knocking on the door of automatic qualifying distances, like Landree McNair in the high jump, while others, like the team’s hurdlers, are sitting close, but not quite, at the top of the charts.
Hauxwell pointed out that hurdlers Joee Clevenger, Tristan Nordhausen and Karlie Anderson are right on the edge of state qualifying performances.
“They’ve gotten stronger and improved. They’re right there,” he said.
Between a lot of athletes able to compete and a warmer day, the Longhorns set plenty of personal bests at the Chase County Invite, especially in field events where 15 PRs were set.
CCS won all three relays and added wins by Bryn McNair in the 400, 800 and high jump, Landree McNair in the 1,600, Tessa Smith in the 3,200 and Ali McNair in the pole vault.
Longhorn sprinters dominated, with four reaching the 100 finals and six in the 200 finals.
Hauxwell said Ella Colson and Riley Rusher have been improving in the sprints and it was good for them to run against Ogallala’s Sophia Plugge.
Saturday at Hershey was a good day overall, Hauxwell said, and he liked how his team responded with B. McNair sitting out due to an injury.
Hauxwell picked out the 400 runners as a group that stepped up. R. Rusher and Peyton Owens both PRd while finishing second and third, respectively. A. McNair came in fifth with a season best.
Longhorn triple jumpers also stood out to Hauxwell. Katelyn Stamm won the triple jump with a PR of 33’7.5 and Ava McNair and Liz Reeves placed third and fourth, respectively, with jumps over 31 feet.
    R. Rusher and Colson went 1-2 in the 100, both with PRs, while Hayley Rusher was third.
    R. Rusher also PRd in her 200 win with H. Rusher coming in second.
Longhorn hurdler Peyton Owens was second in the 300 meter hurdles with Clevenger, Nordhausen and Marley Randall sweeping third through fifth.
Randall has been running “out of her head” in the race, Hauxwell said. Randall also PRd in the triple jump last week.
The CCS and Hershey meets allowed varsity and JV competitors. The JV also went to the McCook JV meet Monday, winning the team title, and will go to the North Platte JV meet this coming Monday.
With CCS only taking 15 athletes, Hauxwell was happy with the team win over larger schools like Holdrege, McCook, Gothenburg, Ogallala and Lexington.
Hauxwell said it was a team effort.
It’s critical to get everyone a chance to compete, Hauxwell said, especially with varsity only meets coming up to end the season.

With the postseason knocking, Hauxwell said coaches are urging athletes to listen to their bodies and be smart.
Hauxwell said he’d rather have a healthy athlete short on training than someone who’s battling through injuries .
Up next
Discussions were held early  in the week about the possibility of moving SPVA from Friday to Thursday or Saturday.
Hauxwell said moving the meet would have set off a domino effect.
Activity directors decided to keep the meet on Friday, thanks in part to the CCS junior high meet Thursday.
Field events will start in Hershey at 9 a.m.
Some bigger teams may be at Tuesday’s Best of the Midwest this year. Hauxwell said postponements and conference meets can cause some teams to not attend.
Listed as having athletes available to qualify this year are Anselmo-Merna, Arapahoe, Arthur County, Brady, Cambridge, Cozad, Creek Valley, Dundy County Stratton, Elm Creek, Gothenburg, Hershey, Hitchcock County, Hyannis, Maxwell, Maywood/Hayes Center, McCook, Medicine Valley, Mullen, North Platte, Overton, Paxton, Perkins County, Sandhills Valley, Sandhills/Thedford, South Loup, South Platte, Southwest, St. Pat’s, Wallace and Wauneta-Palisade.
