CCS boys run away with Dundy County Stratton Twilight

The Chase County boys’ track team came off strong performances at the Best of the Midwest May 2 and went on to dominate the competition at the Dundy County Stratton Twilight Friday.
Deciding who participates in which event at the invitation-only Best of the Midwest can be a challenge.
Head Coach Carl Zuege said some of Chase County’s meet entries reflected just trying to keep guys fresh while also attempting to work their speed as much as possible.
“With so many guys on the team it can be tricky getting everyone what they need, but we did the best we could,” Zuege added.
Having a consistent schedule without any makeup meets has helped the Longhorns maintain some fairly normal routines, and Zuege said the team could begin the period in its training cycle where athletes could begin to sharpen their fitness and lighten up the workload a bit.
CCS put an emphasis on relays and maybe one other event for its athletes who qualified.
“Another component to making those decisions is attempting to find races where there will be great competition, however the movement in and out of events by other teams can make that difficult,” Zuege said.
Coaches planned on running Easton Fries, who currently sits sixth in the Class C 400, against Class C leader Cache Gracey of South Loup.
When Gracey pulled out, coaches switched Fries to the 1,600-meter relay.
CCS went on to win the relay, which included Jonathan Sosa, Tristan Jablonski and Stephen Murray, by a second over Gothenburg.
Chase County’s 3,200-meter relay, Luis Co, Jablonski, Murray and Zach Herbert, placed first by nearly eight seconds.
Fries also won the 110-meter hurdles.
Also competing in Sutherland was Kade Anderson, third in the triple jump and 300-meter hurdles, and sixth in the 110-meter hurdles; Dawson Mollendor, fourth in the 100; Thomas Reeves, fifth in the 200; Haven Hauxwell, fifth in the 3,200; Jensen Olsen, fifth, 110-meter hurdles; Jaret Peterson third in the discus and fifth in the shot put; Cooper Dillan fifth in the discus; Mason Wallin, fourth in the pole vault; and James McArthur, eighth in the triple jump.
Zuege said the Longhorns got what they wanted out of the DCS Twilight Friday, to lighten everyone’s schedule and spread the events out a little more.
CCS was dominant, beating second place Perkins County 293-91.
Chase County swept the 100, 200 and 400 titles with wins by Thomas Reeves, Tucker Mollendor and Murray, respectively.
Other wins came from Fries in both hurdle races, Jaret Peterson in both throws, Haven Hauxwell in the 1,600, Andrew Wiest in the 3,200, Mason Wallin in the pole vault and Anderson in the triple jump.
Up next
After last year’s trip to Mitchell for district track, Zuege said the Longhorns are very excited to be headed to Grant Thursday.
“First of all, the distance is huge. Instead of leaving at like 4:30 in the morning, we won’t leave for Grant until around 8. More importantly though, Perkins County runs a great track meet, and they have really good wind cover up there, which is huge when you are competing against the times of all the other Class C schools statewide,” he said.
The meet will start with boys’ pole vault at 9:45. There will be a morning session of field events, then running events before the second session field events begin at 2 p.m. followed by running events.
The Longhorns are mostly healthy heading into Thursday.
Zuege said there are couple of guys battling some hamstring issues.
“Funny enough, our hamstring issues have mostly come on the two warmest meets of the year—so I guess I should stop worrying about injuries on cold days,” he said, adding, hopefully there is nothing that will keep anyone out of district competition.
