CCS athletes compete at junior high state track

Junior high track athletes from Chase County ended their seasons on a high note with performances at the Junior High Championship Meet Saturday in Gothenburg.
The girls’ 1,600-meter relay entered the meet seeded third, but finished second. The team improved its season’s best by eight seconds and set a new JH record with a time of 4:20.23.
Waverly, which finished first, broke what was the longest standing meet record, CCS Coach Nathan Gaswick said.
“I was extremely proud of how this group ran and attacked all of their splits,” he added.
At a meet that featured 24 athletes from across all classes in each event, Gaswick said the majority of CCS kids and relays finished in the top 16 in the state and that is something to be extremely proud of.
Tucker Mollendor was 12th in the 100-meter dash, 14th in long jump and 15th in the 200-meter dash.
Haven Hauxwell was 22nd in the 1,600-meter run.
The boys’ 400-meter relay team of Brextin Moreno, Austin Smith, Destry Russell and Mollendor was 13th.
The boys’ 1,600-meter relay of Jackson Cyboron, Smith, Kaden McArthur and Hauxwell placed 15th.
The boys 3,200-meter relay team placed 11th. Team members were Brandon Chavira, Krayton Paisley, McArthur and Hauxwell.
“Our male relays ran solid times; however, the majority of other teams ran much faster than their entry/seed times and our finishing placement was lower than our entry rank even though our times were consistent with what we had been running most of the year,” Gaswick said.
For the Longhorn girls, Emily Randall was 16th in the 400-meter dash and Miranda Spady placed 21st in pole vault.
“Our female relays were a definite bright spot on the day,” Gaswick said.
The 3,200-meter relay came into the meet ranked 16th and finished 10th. Team members were Elizabeth Hanna, Kate Colson, Tessa Smith and Spady.
“They ran 20 seconds faster and all performed very well,” Gaswick said.
“Overall, it was a great experience for a lot of our athletes and our program and the high school program will continue to benefit because of the competition and atmosphere our athletes get to experience at this meet,” Gaswick said.
