New MPCC community classes list announced

Mid-Plains Community College, located at 1324 Broadway, Imperial, will begin community classes the beginning of October. There will be an interesting variety of subjects and activities offered going into the holidays.

Circle of Security—Oct 2 – Nov 20, Mondays 5:30–7:30 p.m., Carol Kunnemann, FREE—At times we feel lost or without a clue about what children might need from us. The Circle of Security Parenting program is based on decades of research about how secure parent-child relationships can be supported and strengthened.
This class welcomes parents, grandparents, family members, teachers, day care providers and foster parents to attend.
Intro to Tia Chi—Oct. 4 – 25, Wednesdays 5:30–6:30 p.m., Marcy Nesbitt (Certified in Tia Chi), $45—Tia Chi is a gentle whole-body exercise for all ages to boost your health, immunity and happiness. According to an article in Prevention magazine, Tia Chi helps to improve balance, coordination, strength and flexibility. It is particularly great for better balance and to help prevent falls in older people. Studies have also shown this mind-body exercise to be beneficial to quality of life, mental health, physical health and boosting the immune system.
Experimental Watercolor—Oct. 10, 17 ,24, 9 a.m.–12 noon, Marcia Bauerle, $99—An exploration of various methods of resist using water-based paints and collage on watercolor paper. All levels of experience are welcome to attend.
Heartsaver First Aid & CPR—Oct. 10 and 17, 6–9 p.m., Sabrina Hayes, $65.
Who Gets Grandma’s Yellow Pie Plate?—Oct. 11, 5:30–8 p.m., Brandi Hilton-Hagemann, $15—This class provides research-informed practical strategies to protect your family relationships when passing on personal possessions. Paring down and deciding if and how to transfer personal possessions is inevitable when a family member downsizes, declutters, move or dies.
While it may seem simple, decisions about personal property can be challenging and lead to serious family conflicts.
Halloween Cookies—Oct. 12, 5:30–7 p.m., Bobbi Hust, $40—Come join us as we create some spooky goodies just in time for Halloween.
Getting Retirement Right—Nov. 14, 6–9 p.m., Mark Werkmeister (Certified Financial Planner), $39—Preparing for retirement is probably the single most important financial challenge you face today. This course will teach you to apply new truths and techniques that will help you prepare for what’s ahead so you can retire successfully and keep your retirement plan on track.
Holiday Appetizers, Nov. 3, 11 a.m., Megan Wenzlick, $45—Learn how to create beautiful and delicious holiday appetizers. Discover quick and easy tips on entertaining your guests for any season.
Robotics for Youth (Ages 8-11)—Nov. 4 and 11, 9 a.m.–12 noon, Chance Thayer, $45— Youth can learn about robotic building and programming with Lego EV3 technology. Apply science, technology, engineering and math concepts to complete challenges while having fun.
A Merry Holiday Centerpiece—Dec. 11, 6–7:30 p.m., Nickole Sis of Seize the Daisy, $90—Create a centerpiece using several varieties of evergreens, fresh flowers, ribbons, candies, berries and pinecones to adorn your Christmas tablescape. Learn the basics of arranging in a fun and undaunting way and take home a beautiful, fresh arrangement.
Participants need to bring pruners and sharp scissors.

Amberley Snyder – Tragedy to Triumph, Guest Speaker, tickets $10, Monday, Oct. 23, 10 a.m. MST, Ogallala High School Theater
Tuesday, Oct. 24, 1 p.m. CST, MPCC Theater, North Platte—Amberley was severely injured in an automobile accident a few days before her 19th birthday resulting in total paralysis from the waist down. She continues to compete as a professional athlete/barrel racer, a keynote speaker, author and actor. Amberley shares her story of triumph over tragedy hoping she can motivate others to believe in themselves and “get back on the horse.”
