Four art students at CCS medal at McCook show

Students at Chase County Schools captured five of the top medals at the April 8 McCook Community College Paint-In art show.
A panel of judges chose the top three in each category from nearly 300 pieces of art submitted by students from 19 area high schools.
Morgan Peterson and LaReina Colton both took first, Caelyn Long captured a pair of seconds, while Matalie Wallin was third. All are seniors.
CCS art teacher Chelsea Zuege said she took about 30 pieces of art from her students to the show and competition.
Peterson’s first place came in the mixed media division with her entry titled “Sandlot.” Her baseball-themed collage used different paper types and different drawing media.
Colton captured the top placing in the digital and photography division with “Foxy.” She created a digital drawing on an Ipad of one of the characters she created.
Long took second in mixed media with “Impression.” She created a block print using different types of paper in a collage.
Long’s other second place was in the painting division, with an oil creation of Chadwick Boseman, who played the Black Panther character in the Marvel series movies.
Wallin placed third in the prints/printmaking division with a black and white block print titled “Rabbit.”
Lexington High School’s Brianna Zarate’s untitled acrylic on pastel was named Best of Show.
Zuege said 15 CCS seniors were divided into three teams for the Paint-In on-site contest which had a “Conflict and Diversity” theme.
They were among 24 teams from 16 schools in the Paint-In won by Norton Community in Kansas. Lexington  was second and Southwest, third.
CCS seniors in the paint-in were Morgan Peterson, Chloe Dillan, Julian Juarez, Juan Ruiz, Keenan Cole, Shelby Baird, Ella O’Neil, Princess Valencia, Brittany Chavez, Andrea Venegas, Olivia Hiykel, LaReina Colton, Caelyn Long, Kourtynie Speaker and Delaney Krutsinger.
Zuege said the medal-winning artwork and the CCS Paint-In pieces are on display in the main high school hallway.
