CCS hosts first speech invitational of season

Chase County Schools held a speech invitational Saturday, the first one of the season.
Students joining CCS students in the competition came from Perkins County and Sutherland.
Alexandria Schilke, CCS teacher for grade 7-8 English and high school speech, said five CCS students attended but only three competed this time.
 “My older students were ready for the meet, but I have some new students who just attended the meet to start the process of selecting their speeches,” Schilke said.
CCS’s early meet in January is always a little difficult with it being the first Saturday coming off Christmas break, but the students, A.D. Troy Hauxwell and CCS staff were a great deal of help, she added.
The three participating students were sophomore Mason Tyerman, junior Brayan Cazares and junior Kobe Norman.
Tyerman placed third in Persuasive Speaking, second in Serious and fourth in Duet.
Cazares competed in Duet and Serious.
Norman placed second in Entertainment and fourth in Duet.
“Again, with it being the first meet following Christmas break, it can be difficult for teams to have students ready to compete, but it still is a great opportunity for the students from each team to get ballots and feedback on their pieces,” Schilke said.
Students who attended but will compete in upcoming meets were junior Annika McDaniel who will be competing in Entertainment, and freshman Connor Tyerman who will compete in Informative, she added.
