Ryan Sothan, outreach coordinator for the Nebraska Attorney General’s office, gave a seminar at MPCC on protecting yourself from fraud and scams. The seminar was sponsored by Waypoint Bank.

Seminar sheds light on protection from scam artists

A seminar at Mid-Plains Community College (MPCC) Monday reviewed how scam artists across the country and around the world are attempting to defraud Nebraskans every day.
This is especially true within the state’s senior population, said speaker Ryan Sothan, the Nebraska Attorney General’s outreach coordinator from Lincoln.
“There’s no shame in being a victim of a scam artist. Anyone can find themselves within their crosshairs, but seniors are being deliberately targeted,” Sothan said.
The Attorney General’s office (AGO) receives complaints from scam victims and attempted scams daily, he said.
“Of all the complaints our office receives, 37% are for people 60 years old and older, and that age group is severely under-reported,” he added.
These attacks take their toll.
According to a long-term study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association, “elder financial abuse is associated with shorter survival in older adults.”
