Primary voters Tuesday will get own mask if they want it

Only real contest in next week’s voting is commissioner’s race

In this time of dealing with COVID-19, nearly every type of activity has seen changes.
Tuesday’s Primary Election will be no different.
When voters arrive to cast ballots in-person at Chase County’s five polling places, they’ll see some differences. And, they will all have a souvenir to take home, too.
The pen each voter uses in the cubicles will go home with that voter.
While it will not be required to vote, polling place workers will have masks available for people, or voters can bring their own, said Wendy Moe of the county clerk’s office.
Workers will also take care to keep surfaces clean, and the six-foot spacing between individuals will be encouraged.
“The voting cubicles will get wiped down between voters,” she said.
Each polling place will be provided with blue masking tape. Moe said they are leaving it up to the workers at each site whether they want to mark off six-foot spaces with that tape or not.
County Clerk/Election Commissioner Debbie Clark said she still has all the work she normally does before an election, but expects one difference this year.
“With the huge number of early ballots requested, I’m feeling we are going to have some polling place workers with not much to do,” she said.
Just under 40% of Chase County’s 2,451 registered voters requested early ballots by the May 1 deadline. Of the 980 individual voters requesting the early ballots, 679 were already back Tuesday morning for a 68% return, Moe said.
Clark reminds voters who have not yet returned their early voting ballots that there is a drop box on the west side of the courthouse where those ballots can be placed.
