Local pilot’s schedule changes due to coronavirus

Bill Bauerle won’t be flying to China again anytime soon.
Bauerle, an Imperial resident, has been an international airline pilot for more than 30 years.
The majority of his recent flights have been to Asia, mostly to Beijing, for about 10 years.
With the outbreak of the coronavirus in China, multiple U.S. airlines are canceling select flights to China.
President Donald Trump announced Friday that foreign nationals who have been to China in the past 14 days are barred from entering the United States. U.S. citizens and permanent residents are still allowed to enter.
Those who have been to Hubei province, which includes Wuhan, where the virus originated, in the past 14 days must go through a mandatory quarantine.
American flights
American Airlines (AAL) canceled all flights to mainland China last week and announced Saturday all flights to Hong Kong were canceled through Monday.
It “will make decisions about Hong Kong flights each day based on our operational situation,” AAL said in a statement.
However, the Allied Pilots Association (APA), a union representing 15,000 American Airlines pilots, has sued the company to halt the carrier’s U.S.-China service, citing “serious, and in many ways still unknown, health threats posed by the coronavirus.”
As of Saturday, the lawsuit against AAL is still pending a judge’s decision.
A press release from Delta Airlines announced it will suspend flights between the U.S. and China until at least April 30.
