IVFD responds to early morning combine fire

The Imperial Volunteer Fire Department (IVFD) responded to an alarm Monday morning around 8:30 a.m.
“We think it was lightning that caused the (combine) fire,” IVFD Chief Doug Mitchell said.
Mitchell said the combine that caught fire belonged to Clay Majors of Enders.
The combine wasn’t in use at the time.
“It had been sitting for two or three days,” Mitchell said.
“There was that big lightning storm came through,” he added. “So possible lightning was the cause.”
Mitchell said the roads getting to the fire were bad because of the rain.
“It was terribly muddy,” he said.
IVFD was only able to get two quick attack units and the command truck to the scene.
“We had the water tankers on the highway and kept going back and forth to get water,” Mitchell said.
No other property or crops were damaged.
“It didn’t look like a great big fire when we got there,” he added. “There was a lot of smoke though. It was really hot.”
