Tristan Nordhausen drew pictures and positive messages, including this sun, with her mother, Lesley, at their home in Imperial Sunday as part of a group effort to spread hope during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chase County residents go to sidewalks with positivity

The idea started in Imperial thanks to Lesley Nordhausen.

The idea was named Chalk Your Walk.

“Draw or write encouraging messages on your driveway or sidewalk with chalk, then head outside and take a walk and look for other prints and messages written by your neighbors,” the graphic said.

Thanks to the calm weather Sunday, many Imperial residents took up the idea and went to their sidewalks to spread positivity.

Nordhausen heard about the idea from friends at her former workplace in Palmyra.

“I was planning on saying something about it on Facebook but then they put up that graphic so I just shared it,” Nordhausen said.

Nordhausen then shared the image on her Facebook page.

Another Imperial resident, Chelsea Zuege, saw the post from Nordhausen and shared it with her friends.

Zuege, an art teacher at Chase County Schools, was excited to see the post.

Zuege’s friends shared photos of their creations to her post.

Some of the creations were in Imperial, others were either in another town like Ogallala or even Phoenix, Arizona, where they wouldn’t be easily seen.

Some sidewalks in Imperial showed fun drawings by area youths, while others shared positive messages like ones done by Zuege’s sister, Darcie Boman.

Some of Boman’s messages said, “Be the reason someone smiles today,” and “when nothing goes right, go left.”

CCS senior and art student Carissa Hill drew an image of Dory from Disney’s Finding Nemo at Hill’s Family Foods.

Hill’s drawing also showed Dory’s catchphrase, “Just keep swimming.”
