Longhorns earn wins, prepare for big meet Thursday at Ogallala

Members of the young Chase County boys’ track team got their feet wet last Thursday in Perkins County. The Longhorns faced the Plainsmen and South Platte in the afternoon triangular.
CCS Head Coach Carl Zuege said it was a good start for his athletes and a step in the right direction for many of the younger guys to learning more about the effort level and intensity that coaches expect.
“However, by and large, I thought that our younger athletes did a nice job for their first time,” Zuege added.
He added that this meet is perfect for what CCS is trying to accomplish at this point in the season.
“We have unlimited entries in events, and we aren’t keeping score. Therefore, we are able to concentrate on each individual and allow them to get a meet under their belts without the pressure of a big meet. That pressure comes soon enough as we get ready for the Ogallala meet this Thursday,” Zuege said.
Of the 18 events, CCS won 16.
With an experienced group of sprinters, Zuege was pleased with their start to the season.
Dawson Mollendor was an  individual double winner, taking first place the 100 and 200 meter dashes.
Kade Anderson was first in both hurdle events.
Mollendor and Anderson ran legs on winning relays.
Ryan Bernhardt won the long jump, ran on two winning relays and was second in the 100 meters.
Zuege also pointed out the 400 and 1,600 meter relays, as well as Brit Gockley clearing 12 feet in pole vault and Cedric Maxwell in the 400 meters.
“Our throwers and jumpers had some good marks, we just need to develop consistency, which will come with time and experience,” Zuege said.
“I was also happy with a few of our young 800 runners, who competed really well their first time out,” he added.
CCS will travel to Ogallala Thursday.
Zuege said it will be the Longhorns’ toughest meet of the season thanks to a field of mostly Class B schools that bring a bunch of depth and athleticism. The meet has also added new teams including Alliance.
“This meet just continues to challenge us. This will be an excellent gauge of where our team is right now, and should help prepare us for the challenges of the upcoming season,” Zuege said.
Field events will kick off the competition at 10 a.m.
