Longhorn XC takes second, third at Cambridge

Moreno, Jablonski repeat as individual gold medal champs

While there were no team titles Friday for the Longhorns, Chase County runners repeated first place individual finishes in the varsity races at the Cambridge Invite.
Jordan Jablonski took the gold in the girls’ 5K division, more than half a minute ahead of Cambridge’s Rachel Harris.
However, with Cambridge runners finishing second, third and seventh, they edged Chase County’s girls by three points.
Chase County’s top three—Jablonski, Morgan Peterson and Caelyn Long, were first, sixth and eighth.
On the boys’ side, freshman Trevin Moreno finished nearly a minute ahead of second place runner Isaiah Springer of Wilcox-Hildreth for his second consecutive gold medal.
Rounding out the Chase County boys’ scoring were Navy Smith, eighth, and Colin O’Neil in 15th. That was good enough for third as a team behind Wilcox-Hildreth and Southwest.
Coach Carl Zuege said the girls had a strong second place team finish.
“I thought they showed great improvement in the last week. Jordan ran a very strong race. She led from the start and never really got challenged,” he said.
Jablonski erased about a full minute from her time at this meet last year, he noted.
Zuege added Peterson ran a very solid race, as did Long. McKenzie Vogt had a really nice race in her first ever 5K at this level, and continues to improve each week, according to the coach. He said Matalie Wallin also showed great improvement over last week, and Maddie Hanes may have run the best race of her career on Friday.
Zuege said had the meet scored four instead of three, it would have pushed the Longhorn boys into the runner-up team spot.
“Trevin won this race convincingly. He pretty much led from wire-to-wire. It will be fun to see him face the increased competition level this week at our home invite,” Zuege said.
He thought Smith ran well again and O’Neil, Mason Tyerman and Mason Wallin also turned in “really good races,” he said. Kobe Norman also ran strong, he said, adding it was good to see the other guys get a 5K under their belts.
Home this week
Chase County hosts its home meet Thursday starting with the varsity girls at 3:30 p.m. at the Imperial Country Club with 15 other teams expected.
Zuege said the meet will bring some of the best competition they’ve seen so far, with about 100 in each race. Thursday’s expected heat will be another challenge, he said.
Most of the SPVA schools will attend.
The 3,000 meter junior high race will follow the 5K varsity divisions at 4:30 p.m.
