CCS softball falls to out-of-state competition

The Chase County softball team dropped three games last week.
CCS opened its week with a double header against Holyoke, Colorado (5-3) Aug. 31.
Holyoke took advantage of Longhorn errors to put runs on the board. Holyoke scored four runs in three innings thanks to five CCS errors.
The Longhorns were on the receiving end of errors, as well. CCS took advantage of two Holyoke errors to score lead off hitter Kathya Aragon. Another error set the Longhorns up with runners on first and second before the first inning ended.
Kayla Chavira was hit by a pitch to lead off the second inning, but, after two passed balls, was stranded on third base.
Holyoke plated three more runs in the fourth inning and five in the fifth thanks, in part, to a home run, triple and double.
Krista Meeske led off the fifth inning with a single for CCS. Back-to-back walks and an error loaded the bases, but a strike out and fly out ended the game, a 2-12 CCS loss.
Jaiden Hill pitched for the Longhorns. Hill struck out four, walked one and gave up five hits. The Longhorns’ defense had 11 errors in the game.
CCS cut down on its errors in the second game of the double header and played a much closer contest.
The Longhorns held Holyoke scoreless in the first inning, then scored three runs of their own. CCS put the ball in play four times which helped score Ella O’Neil, Jesusita Ruiz and Markenna Terryberry.
Holyoke answered in the second inning with six runs on three hits and two walks.
CCS kept the game close with a double by Hill, who came around to score on a single by O’Neil.
After only giving up one run to Holyoke in the top of the third inning, CCS plated two runs to make the score 6-7. Aurora Griebel doubled and Hailey Markee singled. Both came around to score.
Holyoke added four runs in the fourth inning and five in the fifth, while CCS only scored one run in each of the last two innings. Ruiz walked and scored in the fourth, while Markee hit another single and scored in the fifth.
Chavira walked eight and struck out two batters, while giving up six hits. The Longhorns had four errors.
The Longhorns hosted Perry, Oklahoma Friday.
CCS was unable to score any runs in the 0-13 varsity loss.
O’Neil had the Longhorns’ only hit in the game, a first-inning single to right field. Terryberry walked in the inning. The pair were the only CCS base runners in the game.
Hill gave up 11 hits, two walks and had one strike out.
CCS lost the JV game 7-16. Ruiz doubled and Annika McDaniel singled in the game.
