Broncos on a roll, beat Southwest for third-straight win

Wauneta-Palisade’s football team won its third straight game with a 43-26 victory over Southwest Friday.
The Broncos got the ball and steadily moved down the field to start the game. WP took a 6-0 lead on a six-yard pass from Garrett Hanna to Aidan Kennicutt.
Defensively, the Broncos didn’t allow a first down on Southwest’s first possession, but the Roughriders were quick to return the favor.
WP turned the ball over on downs on Southwest’s 30-yard line. Three plays later, the Roughriders were in the end zone.
As the game moved into the second quarter, it swung to Southwest’s favor. An eight-play drive finished with the Roughriders in the end zone once more.
WP Co-Head Coach Joseph Frecks said WP started making adjustments during the second quarter that had the Broncos rolling by halftime.
WP matched the effort, capping a nine-play drive with its own touchdown to leave the teams tied at 14 heading into halftime.
The third quarter was all about the Broncos.
Starting out on defense, WP got an interception and turned it into six points on a 40-yard run by Kyle Jutten.
The Broncos took over after a Roughriders’ drive stalled. This time it was Grant Walker breaking free for a long touchdown, this one a 48-yard run.
After holding on fourth down, WP capped a 22-point quarter with a one-yard run by Jutten to put the Broncos up 36-14 heading into the fourth quarter.
Frecks said Southwest came out hitting hard from the beginning of the game and coaches were proud of how the boys responded going on a 30-0 run after getting down 14-6.
Southwest sustained a long drive and scored on its first fourth quarter possession, but  Hanna scooped up the kickoff and ran it back for a touchdown.
The Roughriders found the end zone one last time to wrap up scoring in the game.
WP shook off 13 penalties to get the win.
Jutten finished the night with 114 yards on 17 carries. Walker tallied 62 yards.
Besides rushing and receiving attempts by Jutten, Kennicutt and Walker, Conner Bryner, Hunter Miner and Michael Duvel contributed offensive yards.
Frecks said Co-Head Coach Randy Geier is doing a great job of keeping things balanced on offense.
“We have versatility throughout and that makes us hard for teams to defend,” he added.
Up next
WP will host Paxton, 1-3, Friday. Kickoff will be at 6:30 p.m. MT.
Frecks said Paxton plays one of six-man’s toughest schedules.
“They are playing some young players who have really improved as the year has went on. We are excited for the challenge of another RPAC and district opponent,” he said.
