Chase County Schools Quiz Bowl finishes third at SPVA

The Chase County Quiz Bowl team went 3-3 and placed third at the SPVA meet last Tuesday. Team members are freshmen James Adle, Evan O’Neil and Caleb Stamm, sophomore Evan Tomky, juniors George Colton, Navy Smith and Andrew Wiest, and senior Zach Herbert.
CCS finished in a three-way tie for third but won the tie breaker between the Longhorns, Bridgeport and Sutherland.
Each of the three teams went 1-1 against the other two, leading organizers to look at total points scored in all competition.
Chase County scored 215 total points, compared to 210 for Sutherland and 150 for Bridgeport. Initial toss-up questions are worth five points and, if the toss up is answered correctly, bonus questions are worth 10 points.
CCS opened the tournament with back-to-back losses to Perkins County, 20-45, and Sutherland, 25-30, before bouncing back with three-straight wins. CCS beat Bridgeport 55-5, North Platte St. Pat’s 55-30 and Kimball 55-35. The day ended with a 5-70 loss to Hershey.
Coach Chelsea Zuege said the win over NPSP, which finished second overall, stood out because it seemed like almost all the team members contributed.
“NPSP has also been a tough team to beat in the past, so it felt good to get a win against them,” she added.
Perkins County went undefeated and was crowned conference champions.
Last year CCS went 0-7 at the SPVA meet.
“We’ve added a few young team members that compliment our upperclassmen. They are well rounded and aren’t afraid to buzz in,” Zuege said.
Heading into Wednesday’s ESU 15 district meet, Zuege said team members just need to stay confident and buzz in when they have a hunch they are right.
Other schools in the ESU include Dundy County Stratton, Hayes Center, Hitchcock County, Maywood, McCook, Medicine Valley, Southwest and Wauneta-Palisade.
Colton, Herbert and Wiest qualified for state speech and will compete there Thursday.
Arrangements were made for the trio to participate in the ESU Quiz Bowl at Southwest in Bartley, then make their way to Kearney for speech.
