CCS students participate in first rodeo of the season

Several Chase County High School students traveled to McCook for the Southwest Nebraska High School Rodeo on April 20 and 21. The event was held at the Red Willow County Fairgrounds in the Kiplinger and Alice Arenas. This two day event was the first rodeo of the spring high school rodeo season. The events started at 8 am on both Saturday and Sunday. Around 110 students from all over the state participated across several events. Participants earn points, which are added up over the season and help determine who earns a spot at the Nebraska High School Finals in June.
CCS freshmen, Wyatt Krausnik and Alex Nelson participated in the Tie Down competition. In this event, the competitor must rope a calf, throw the calf down and then tie any three legs together. The calf must then stay down with its legs tied for six seconds in order to be a successful run. Both received a no time.
Alex Nelson and senior Jason Nelson took part in the Team Roping event. In Team Roping, each competitor is assigned as either the Header or the Heeler. The Header must first catch a steer either around the neck, around one horn and the head or around both horns. The Heeler then attempts to loop a rope around both hind legs. Time stops when both catches are made and all slack is removed from the ropes. Alex Nelson and his roping partner Felycia Kerman of West Holt High School received no time. Jason Nelson and his partner Bladen Arensdorf of North Platte High School also received no time.
Two CCS students also participated in the Barrel Racing event. In Barrels, a rider must maneuver their horse around three barrels in a specific cloverleaf pattern as fast as they can without touching the barrels. Senior Kathya Aragon made a time of 24.166 in Barrels during the Sunday event. Junior Abby Spicer made a time of 18.786 on Saturday and a time of 23.489 on Sunday.
Abby Spicer also participated in the Goat Tying event. The Goat Tying event is similar to Tie Down but with a goat instead of a calf. On Sunday she received a time of 10.630. On Saturday, she received a time of 9.090, which earned her 6th place.
The next events are in Hyannis on April 27 and Arthur on April 28.
