Girl Scouts learn campfire cooking, fishing, camping skills at campout PDF Print E-mail

The Imperial Junior Level Girl Scouts took a camping trip the last part of July to the newly-rebuilt Lakeview Cabin near Lake Maloney.
The girls spent two days and one night at the cabin and learned skills from building a safe campfire to pitching tents.
“I’ve never been to a camp before,” said Delaney Krutsinger “so I think it was awesome!”
The girls also learned different ways to cook meals while camping. “Cat Can Pizza” was among their favorite as well as smores prepared in a Dutch Oven. They learned new campfire songs and told ghost stories which Halle Fiedler thought was the best thing ever. They also played several classic games while on the trip, but the one they most enjoyed was “Ghost in the Graveyard.”
Julie Geiser from the Nebaska Game and Parks Commission in North Platte talked to the girls about fishing. They learned how to bait a hook, about different kinds of lures, special knot tying (which included a little spit) and where to look for different types of fish. The girls then practiced casting and, though they never caught any fish, some still wanted to continue fishing long after the lesson was over.
Since it was a requirement to have a lifeguard on duty for the girls to swim, they had the opportunity to acquire Shanna Carter as their personal lifeguard. Carter is an Alumni Girl Scout who completed the Gold and Silver Award with her troop by doing work along the courthouse and making mosaic planters at the library.
Those in attendance representing Juniors were Halle and Sophie Fiedler, Correy Koellner, Virginia Kimble, Delaney Krutsinger, Jolee Schoenholz, Matalie Wallin and Remington Yaw.
Special guests were two girls from New York, Betsy and Caroline, who were visiting their grandparents Phil and Betty Lou Harris, who drove the girls to the cabin and Carleigh Lewis. Other adults who helped out were Amanda Kimble, Angela Lewis, Heather Schoenholz and Char Wallin.
